Our engaging curriculum is guided by the needs of the student, the student’s IEP, the NJ Core Content Standards, and the Federal No Child Left Behind Act. Pineland Learning Center has developed a curriculum that provides educational value for students and makes them a part of our teaching success. This curriculum is orchestrated by experienced specialists and delivered in low student-to-instructor ratio groupings by creative, dedicated and talented individuals. Our school also features Agriculture/Horticulture and Marine Science extension programs. Our curriculum allows students to gain a broader learning experience and improve results.
What Makes Us Different?
PLCs' curriculum allows our students to become proficient in all subject areas with a particular focus in:
- Language Arts - balanced literacy program, Rigby
- Mathmatics - hands on
- Science - hands on, experiment based
- Social Studies
- Related Arts - Physical ed, tech, art, drivers' ed
Marine Science Program: Our marine science trips teach students about boating, navigation, recreational fishing the Bay. Six students go out at a time on our 25’ foot boat to collect and study marine species and be in the great outdoors. Boat trips may also focus on the study of Bay Shore history and offer the students artistic experience such as sketching local lighthouses. All outdoor education and marine science activities are designed to give students a sense of accomplishment and responsibility.
Outdoor Education Program: PLC’s outdoor education program gives students an opportunity to succeed in outdoor activities while gaining valuable experience in career-oriented tasks. The outdoor education program gives students “hands-on” experience growing and harvesting strawberries, vegetables, and garlic from our garden and growing greenhouse plants and flowers to take home. They also learn how to care for landscapes and farm animals such as chickens and goats.
Extended School Year: The PLC Extended School Year Program is a six-week summer course incorporating interactive academic and discovery activities while providing an opportunity for students to maintain academic momentum and focus over the summer months. By allowing them to apply their new math and literacy skills to the world around them, students gain practical knowledge and a renewed interest in learning.
Out of School Job Readiness program/Structured Learning Experience: At PLC, we are very proud of our Structured Learning Experience (SLE) program that consists of practical, supervised educational activities. These activities are designed to provide students with exposure to the requirements and responsibilities of specific job titles or job groups, and to assist in making career and educational decisions. SLE can be presented as Career Education, Vocational Education or a Consumer Family Life Skills Program, and may include internships, school-based experiences, volunteer activities, community service, and job shadowing.
