Credit Recovery
|
Based on requests by sending districts, Pineland Learning Center developed a program providing students with excessive absenteeism the opportunity to recover a portion of lost instructional time for the purpose of credit recovery. The process begins with the student petitioning PLC for permission to recover lost instructional time. The administration examines the request in terms of the student's intentions, sincerity, reasons for the absenteeism, number of days to be compensated, volume of material required and the required individualized instruction. If the student appears sincere in his or her request and the arrangements appear feasible, PLC incorporates credit recovery into a larger plan for the student and school personnel who are working together to break down the barriers to regular attendance. If given the opportunity of credit recovery, the extra instructional time occurs between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm, so that there is no interference with the regular school day. PLC also makes arrangements for the student's transportation home. The instruction is provided by PLC staff under direct supervision of our 9-12 High School Curriculum Supervisor and is specific to the student's learning needs. The ratio of credit recovery is one day of credit for each two-hour instructional block. Students are informed that such an opportunity is limited, and any significant infractions or continued absenteeism may cause termination of credit recovery arrangements and possible forfeiture of any time recovered. At PLC, the overall desire is to be fair to students and responsive to referring districts, while maintaining the substance and integrity of instruction.
