Art
Learning experiences in the arts also contribute to the development of academic skills, including the areas of reading, language development and mathematics. At Pineland Learning Center, projects are suited to the individual needs of students.

PLC believes the creative process is often therapeutic, providing a positive emotional release for students. PLC offers a wide range of materials and hands-on processes. The art curriculum allows every student to excel even though they may not be strong in other academic areas.

Music
General Music programs are essential to the basic education of all students. At Pineland Learning Center, students are presented with a balanced and sequential curriculum based upon the National Standards for Music Education. Students receive an introduction to music fundamentals and appreciation, along with the development of individual and ensemble performance skills. PLC offers the opportunity for all students to achieve their maximum potential while attaining a life-long love for music.
  • Students in grades K-5 have the opportunity to expand vocal development within the context of an elementary chorus
  • Students in grades 4-8 can participate in a recorder ensemble as part of an introduction to instrumental technique
  • Students in grades 9-12 can sing in the high school chorus
Each ensemble performs a repertoire representing diverse genres and styles from various periods and cultures during Winter and Spring themed concerts.

The General Music program for PLC sets high expectations and provides strong support for achievement by all students.

Dance
A recent addition for high school students at Pineland Learning Center, each class participates in dance once a week for 55 minutes, under the instruction of Ms. Kathleen Eccleston, to learn the basics of Latin dancing. Students become attuned to the music, memorize steps, demonstrate social grace, develop awareness of their interactions with others, explore movement in new ways and learn to cooperate with each other. PLC works in conjunction with Estilo Dance Studio in Philadelphia, and participates in a semi-annual showcase.

Environmental Science

Pineland Learning Center’s unique environmental education program is a component of the life science curriculum. PLC owns 63 acres of woods, fields and streams consisting of uplands, lowlands and wetlands to support this unique program. Students learn about local and global environmental issues through hands-on experiences and field trips with academic and cultural knowledge embedded in all activities.

Some special aspects of the program include:
  • Studying and observing the complete life cycle of the monarch butterfly“Seed to Table” project – students start seedlings, cultivate, harvest, prepare food and serve during a salad garden party. This activity fully utilizes PLC’s 75’ greenhouse.
  • “Food of the Month” field trips
  • Research of civil war cemetery engraving Adopting evergreen seedlings
  • Caring for the trees, pond, Thoreau cabin, Tahiti hut, Huckleberry Finn hut, tepee and obstacle course
  • Care and feeding of two goats, Billy and Frannie, and roosters, Ali and Tyson
  • Maintaining 2/3 miles of meandering forest trails
  • Excavation and collection of artifacts from previous inhabitants of the property
Pineland Learning Center students have completed several outdoor education projects:
  • Constructed a Tahiti hut, tepee and Huckleberry Finn hut from native materials
  • Built a model of Thoreau’s cabin on Walden Pond, complete with working water pump and well
  • Built two goat sheds and hay hut
  • Designed and maintained an obstacle/confidence course
  • Used geometry to calculate the height of a large pignut hickory tree on the school’s property. Upon certification by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry, the tree was placed on the state’s list of largest trees
The environment is used as a foundation for project-based learning. The educational approach emphasizes hands-on learning, the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, student initiative and concepts that span academic disciplines. The program utilizes the abundance of state parks and forests throughout the region to stimulate curiosity for students in new areas and introduce them to potential careers, like park ranger or naturalist. Students also learn how to be better stewards of our environment.

PLC students study the benefits of forests and trees to the environment and participate in activities like:
  • Planting tree seedlings
  • Carving logs with chisels and homemade mallets
  • Learning about beneficial insects and injurious pests of woodlands
  • Cutting and splitting firewood
  • Maintaining a walnut grove

Driver’s Education
This course is designed to save lives and reduce motor vehicle accidents, emphasizing personal and social safety and the efficient operation of a motor vehicle. New drivers learn perceptual skills and decision-making abilities that enable them to successfully cope with driving situations. Also, they learn the rules and laws of New Jersey in preparation of the written exam, when eligible. Written exams can be administered on-site.

Adaptive Physical Education
Pineland Learning Center is equipped to provide Adaptive Physical Education programs encouraging independent movement activities with adaptive equipment and staff facilitation. Activities are tailored to students’ developmental levels so they can receive the maximum benefit of each activity and be successful in a safe environment. Adaptations and modifications are made to lessons based on each student’s Individualized Education Plan.

Computer Technology
The K-12 computer technology curriculum identifies the essential knowledge and skills that all students need to be active, lifelong learners in a technology intensive environment. The computer program at PLC integrates a range of technology skills into the context of real world learning including:
  • Basic keyboarding skills
  • Word processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Desktop publishing
  • Internet use
  • Databases
  • Presentation skills
Each technology project enhances skills in subject areas such as language arts, mathematics, science, social studies or visual arts. The school yearbook is created and published as part of computer technology for grades 6-12. PLC has also implemented the Study Island program in grades 6-12 as an instructional and diagnostic tool that enables teachers to help students master the state standards and prepare students for state tests in math, language arts and science.

Study Island
Study Island’s focus on New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards enables students to improve their performance in all skill areas tested on the NJ ASK and HSPA, which leads to improved test scores.  The user-friendly, web-based interface enables students to move through the program step-by-step. Each section has a pre-test and a post-test, along with topics that cover each of the Content Standards. Topics consist of lessons, questions, answers and explanations that address the specific skills contained in the Content Standards. With the Study Island program, families with Internet access are able to log on from home.
